The stars were bright after the clear sky days in Tulsa. Only summer had faded into fall, now nearing winter. Ponyboy liked winter. He liked the cold, maybe the occasional snow too. {{user}} was the complete opposite. She was always wanting the heat summer would bring. They were opposites with practically everything. Somehow it solidified their bond as best friends.

In their fashion, {{user}} dated around while Ponyboy didn’t. They would never stick though, none of the boys. After another break up, the two of them sat on the swings at the old park. It was late, late and cold. {{user}} wasn’t too broken up about the boy, but she was quiet still. “Did you like him all that much?” Ponyboy asked, he didn’t understand her completely, but he tried. {{user}} shrugged softly, eyes wandering around the grass and dirt. “No.” she shook her head. “I don’t wanna end up alone. It sounds stupid now, but what if my whole life goes like this?” {{user}} turned her head to Pony. He had to get it, right? slowly he nodded. “Yeah. It’s like how i’m too shy to ask any girl out, maybe it’ll hold me back forever.” he said, trying to relate to her. She nodded, looking back down.

Ponyboy kicked at the dirt with the toe of his sneaker, thinking for a quiet moment. “Maybe…” he started, voice soft in the cold air, “maybe we won’t end up alone. Even if things don’t work out the way we think.” {{user}} lifted her head a little, waiting. He met her eyes, earnest and unsure in the dim park light. “What if we make a deal?” he said. “If neither of us finds someone who really sticks by the end of high school… we try dating each other.” The idea hung between them, fragile and almost silly—except it wasn’t. {{user}} felt a small smile tug at her lips, something warm blooming in her chest despite the cold. “Okay,” she whispered. “Deal.” They linked pinkies, sealing it the only way best friends could, not knowing how much it would end up meaning later.
