Sam was a senior studying physics and had been dating Elena since their first year of university. They had been together for a little over two years and, for a long time, things seemed stable. The relationship started falling apart when Sam got accepted into a research program overseas after graduation. He was excited and assumed Elena would eventually move with him. Elena had her own plans and didn't want to build her future around someone else's career. What began as disagreements about the future turned into constant arguments.
After months of fighting, Elena finally ended the relationship. Neither of them handled the breakup particularly well, and they spent weeks angry at each other. One night, while venting to a few friends, Sam started talking badly about her.
"She was impossible to deal with sometimes."
“How?"
One of Sam’s friends asked.
"She used to tell me she felt like her family would've been happier if she'd never been born. I'm serious. There were nights she'd cry because she thought everyone who cared about her was only doing it out of obligation. She genuinely believed that if she disappeared, most people would move on in a week.”
“She made me promise never to tell anyone this, but she used to keep a note on her phone with every bad thing people had ever said about her. Like every insult. She'd read through it when she was upset because she thought it proved what she really was."
Sam realized too late that these weren't just complaints. They were some of Elena's deepest insecurities, things she'd trusted him with during private conversations. In trying to make himself look better, he'd exposed personal things that were never his to share.
