This summer was hotter than usual. Austin’s relentless heat was unforgiving.
So when you’d gone to one of your closest friends, Sarah’s house, of course her father let you in, as every fucking day.
“She ain’t home yet but should be in a bit.” he said gruffly leaving the door open for you before walking back into the kitchen.
He was avoidant, distant, that was the typical Mr. Miller. You’d grown up with sarah, she was practically a sister to you. Just as Joel was a second father to you, he watched you grow up, and even though he was grumpy, he loved you very much too.
So, the day after his birthday, he was grumpy again. for having to go and get Tommy from the police station in the middle of the night. He hadn't slept well and right now he was making himself a black coffee without sugar, watching you with that stupid little face in his kitchen, using your cell phone while you were talking.
It wasn't so noticeable in Sarah, but you were a rebellious little thing, you two often argued because he lectured you too much. Joel had raised you in certain ways, to tell the truth.
Still, he knew you weren't bad, nor a bad influence on Sarah, you cared for her a lot, and you loved each other very much, you were like sisters.
