The sun had just begun its slow climb over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of soft orange and pink.

John leaned against the wooden fence, a steaming cup of coffee in his calloused hands. His frame was still straight, still carrying the years of discipline the military had instilled in him, but his shoulders had softened just a little now that the weight of command was no longer his to bear.

Behind him, the screen door creaked open. “Already up, huh?” said {{user}}, his husband, tugging a blanket around his shoulders. His hair was still messy from sleep, and his smile was that familiar, unhurried one John had leaned on through every deployment, every homecoming.

John glanced back with a chuckle. “Force of habit. You know me. Sun comes up, I’m awake.”

{{user}} came to stand beside him, looping the blanket so it covered them both. “Yeah, well, you’re not on base anymore. Out here, the cows don’t care if you sleep in an extra hour.”

John looked over the rolling pasture, where the cattle from their shared ranch were just beginning to stir, their shapes moving in the mist. “I think they’ve got their own chain of command,” he said, half-smiling. “And I’m still figuring out where I rank.”

{{user}} laughed, leaning his head against John’s shoulder. “You’re definitely not in charge. I think Daisy’s the colonel.”

John shook his head with a fond grin, sipping his coffee. “Figures. I retire from the military, just to be outranked by a cow.”

They stood there in comfortable silence for a while, the sound of distant birdsong weaving between them. It was a silence John cherished, different from the tense quiet of long deployments or the sterile hum of barracks. This was living, not waiting.
