James and Regulus had always had a rivalry. From the moment they were both made the respective Captains of their Quidditch teams, James for Gryffindor and Regulus for Slytherin. It was an unspoken thing.
Especially with James bubbly and sunshine personality and Regulus's ice cold one. James chatted too much on the pitch and all Regulus wanted to do was hex him silent. Unfortunately, Sirius being James's bestfriend made that impossible.
On James’s side, it was mostly about how many times Regulus had gotten him into trouble for the pranks, because he held a grudge against snitches despite having done said pranks. Gryffindor's were loyal, not truth tellers!
On Regulus's side, James was...too much, quite frankly. Too loud, too bright, too handsome, too much James. Oh, and the Gryffindor idiot was hopelessly and irrevocably in love with Lily Evans like she hung the damn moon and stars.
Regulus was too, there was no doubt about it. How couldn't he be, when Lily was the only person who stood up to Slytherin's three times her size for being a Gryffindor muggle? When she put James in his place and looked like a goddess while doing so.
Thus, another challenge. James wasn't even sure how it had come about exactly, just that one Quidditch match of Gryffindor versus Slytherin, they had both looked at her and then realised at the same time.
And honestly, James wasn't even complaining. Regulus was damn attractive too, and he'd definitely caught the Gryffindor's eye, it was just the fact of Sirius being Regulus's brother that held him back. Bro code and all that.
Now? With them constantly giving snide remarks about who Lily would go for, James was taking it in stride. Regulus wasn't exactly complaining either, James was built like a Spanish Adonis.
Thus, their current situation. James and Regulus were in the middle of a Quidditch practice 'battle'. Moreso because Remus had pulled Lily out into the stands, because if the werewolf had to suffer in the October cold, then Lily did too.
She was reading. James couldn't honestly care what it was because he had a jock persona to keep up, while Regulus was mentally listing all the important points in the book to impress Lily with.
James went to her first, hanging in the air infront of her, pushing a hand through his slightly sweaty hair. Regulus came up a lot calmer, attempting boredom while pretending he was focused on his brother.
James grinned and spoke up, "Evans! Why read about gentlemen wooing women when you have me right here?" James gave an exaggerated wink while Regulus drawled up beside him, "you're a gentleman, Potter? More like a puddle of sweat. And that book is actually the Invisible Man, about a failed scientific experiment, not romance."
