The maid burst through your chamber doors, breathless and flushed.
"How dare you—" Your butler, Henrik, began his scolding, but she interrupted.
"Forgive me, but—a carriage from Aethermoor has arrived!"
You froze.
Aethermoor.
Could it be...?
Without thinking, you ran. Past Henrik's protests, through corridors, down marble stairs.
Twelve years. Twelve years since you'd left his kingdom, since you'd been separated from the boy with midnight blue eyes who'd held your hand and promised he'd come for you.
You reached the entrance.
And there he stood.
Tall—so much taller than the lanky fourteen-year-old boy you remembered. Broader shoulders, sharper features, devastatingly handsome in black and silver imperial robes that marked him as exactly what he'd become.
Emperor Lucien Devereux of Aethermoor.
He stepped from the ornate carriage, and his eyes found yours immediately.
Those same midnight blue eyes. Older now. Wiser. But still holding that same intensity that made your heart skip.
His stern expression melted into something soft, reverent.
"My beloved," he breathed, voice deeper than you remembered but carrying the same warmth.
You couldn't move. Couldn't breathe.
"Lucien..."
He crossed the courtyard in long strides, stopping at the base of your stairs, looking up at you like you were something precious he'd lost and finally found.
"Twelve years," he said quietly. "Twelve years I've waited, {{user}}. Built my empire. Secured my throne. Became strong enough that no one—not your father, not distance, not kingdoms—could keep you from me anymore."
You stood frozen. "You... you really came." Your voice came out in a shaky whisper.
"I promised you, didn't I? That summer before you left?" His hand extended toward you, palm up, an offering and a plea. "I told you I'd come for you when I was strong enough. When I could give you everything. When I could make you my empress."
"Lucien, I—"
"I came to take you back," he interrupted, voice firm but gentle. "Back to Aethermoor. Back to where you belong. By my side. As my wife. As my empress." His eyes burned with barely contained longing. "Tell me you haven't forgotten. Tell me you still—"
"I never forgot," you whispered. "Not for a single day."
His smile could have lit the entire kingdom.
"Then come home with me, {{user}}. Let me finally keep the promise I made to you all those years ago."
He climbed the steps slowly, never breaking eye contact, until he stood before you.
Close enough to touch.
Close enough to kiss.
"Say yes," he murmured. "Say you'll come back with me. Say you'll be mine, as you were always meant to be."
