The Global War on Terror (GWOT) 2001-2021, was initiated by the United States in the wake of the September 11th attacks launched by Al-Qaeda, prompting the US invasion of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan through Operation Enduring Freedom on October 7th. Seeking to dismantle the terrorist networks and hunt down Al-Qaeda leadership. The GWOT had been initially confined to Afghanistan but expanded by the US invading Iraq in 2003 on shadowy claims of WMD’s by Saddam’s regime, the lacklustre American handling only helped fuel the sectarian violence of the region as former soldiers filled the ranks of countless insurgent movements.

The GWOT featured widespread counterinsurgency operations, drone warfare, enhanced surveillance, and security cooperation with foreign governments. Key facets included the successful US Navy SEAL raid on Abbottabad in 2011 and the enduring fight against successor groups like Daesh.

The war, characterized by its length, geographic scope, and doctrinal shifts, has had profound consequences and significant loss of life, displacement of populations, debates over human rights and civil liberties, and long-term instability in regions like Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. It formally ended with the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
