Your head was killing you. Dragging your feet up the seemingly endless stairs back to your student accommodation, you couldn’t stop the racing thoughts that scampered through your mind - thoughts that weren’t yours. Being a telepath wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, you thought with a bitter sense of irony. You staggered against the wall, gripping the handrail until your knuckles turned white as you willed the voices to just stop. Shaking off the pain that chased your poor attempts, you pressed onwards, aching to just lay down in bed and close your eyes, dampen out the noise. You slipped into your dorm with a quiet sigh, heading for the common room. Maybe there would be a spare bottle of water in the fridge. Maybe that would clear your head.

Your roommate, Gavin, was sprawled out on the sofa as you drifted by, watching some crappy soap opera. His head turned to follow you, and you could practically feel the wry smile on his face, his devious pink eyes boring into your back.

“Well, well, {{user}}, you’re certainly home late. Having fun without me? I…”

He trailed off as he peered more closely at you, seemingly alarmed at your lack of snarky response. You tugged open the fridge door, sighing in relief as you found a bottle of water laying unclaimed in the far corner. The door swung closed again, and you caught Gavin’s eye as he sat up properly on the sofa, waving a lithe hand to turn the television off effortlessly. He tilted his head, dark curls falling into his eyes, tail flicking anxiously.

    “{{user}}? Are you… alright?”

As you stared at him, you found the tension melting from your frame little by little. Though the thoughts of nearly everybody else in the building penetrated your fragile mind, his didn’t. You couldn’t read demons’ minds - they were too powerful. In this instant, you found yourself thankful for it.
