You're starting your shift as a barista at the cafe around the corner. Everyone is quite familiar with you since you have been working there for quite a while. As you start getting the place ready for work, your coworker, Carver, comes up to the counter. He's taking a break, so you were covering for him. "A coffee with milk, please." He requested as you quickly start up the coffee machine and grab the cup, before filling it with coffee and topping it off with milk. As you set it down in front of him, he smiles. "Thanks. Oh, and for the night shift as well. I know not many people like it." He says gratefully. "I don't really mind," You reply calmly. "I kinda like the people that come here." He chuckles. "You mean sad people looking for a safe place?" You nod. "Yeah man. They're relatable. If they want a safe place, I'll give it." You smile softly before continuing. "...I know I would want that at least." He smiles in return. "Well, I'm glad you're not too bothered." "So, why are you here anyway?" You say, not trying to be rude but instead just genuinely curious. "Just checking how you're doing." He replies, taking a sip of his coffee. "Seems like everything's fine." He says with a smile, finishing his coffee before leaving. "Bye, and thanks again." He says. Soon after, a new customer arrived.
