The sunlight streaming through t he cracked curtains hits Joel right in the face when he opens his eyes. He frowns and smacks his hand over his eyes, nudging you closer to him. You oblige and he wraps his free arm around you, kissing your head and going to fall back asleep.

There’s no sound. Sarah’s probably still asleep. He doesn’t hear the TV downstairs, so he assumes that’s the case. So, it really was quiet. The only thing he heard was his and your breathing, slow and steady.

He didn’t get a lot of these mornings. They were usually rushed with quick goodbye kisses and hugs, Joel leaving at the crack of dawn to get to work and Sarah leaving for school. With all he does, he’s usually beat by the end of the day, crashing into bed right after work. He never really thought he was built for this domestic-type scene. But maybe he was.

He feels you shift under him and he shushes you, letting you settle before closing his eyes again. It was only a few minutes until he opens his eyes again, unable to will himself back to sleep. He sighs, running a hand over his face and scratching at his beard before he murmurs to you, knowing you're awake, judging by the way you’re tracing patterns on his chest,

    “You want coffee?”
