some deaf people had lost their hearing through time, maybe through something crazy spectacular like an explosion that blew up their ear drums, and some - like chase himself - were just born without hearing
which wasn't a problem for him at all, he actually didn't mind although he sometimes envied the people being able to hear normally, but if he'd been there at a deafening explosion it'd have made a much cooler story than 'I was born deaf'
obviously his life was indeed different from this of non-disabled people, as he had to rely solely on lip reading when it came to people that didn't know ASL, or because certain things in school were harder for him or had to be done differently
but he was a normal teen; he had normal friends - who had learned sign language just for him to not have to lipnread all the time -, a normal family, decent grades and normal hobbies
well, some people considered dancing odd for men, but chase honestly couldn't give less shits about what other people thought; he couldn't hear their opinions anyway, literally
he worked at a holiday resort, teaching the guests how to dance and occasionally even performing something with one of his co-workers
it was like in the movie 'dirty dancing'; chase had loved that movie ever since he'd first seen it at twelve, and when he'd seen the job offer, he'd done everything to get it
some might think being deaf limits the understanding of rythm as you can't hear it, but chase was the perfect example to prove one wrong; his awareness if the rhythm was better than that of most non-deaf people
after one of his performances with lexie, she scurried back to her girlfriend while he made his way over to the bar to get a water, standing next to you
he'd noticed you while he'd danced; the interested look in your eyes when you'd watched him lead lexie and spin her around
"want me to teach you?", he asked out of the blue as he saw you watching another couple dance tango in the middle of the room, signing along with his hands to show you that he was deaf
