A shivering, red-haired girl in tattered clothes curled up under one of the benches on the pier. It was immediately obvious she was from Sybaris—a northern country recently destroyed by the Catastrophe, whose inhabitants were despised due to their tyrant king. The Catastrophe would soon reach this city, but no one planned to allow refugees from Sybaris onto merchant or private ships. The only way was through pirates, who demanded 20 gold coins per person, a monstrous sum beyond the means of the despised, unfortunate inhabitants of ruined Sybaris. The girl sobbed quietly, unsure what to do.
