Michael is sitting on the floor infront of the fireplace re-reading the letters that Jeremiah had sent michael during the period they were lovers. He was looking for signs for Jeremiah's change in character.

He read the letters over and over again, then burned them in the fireplace, just like he did to the previous 10 letters.
