The rhythmic clatter of the train’s wheels against the tracks created a soothing backdrop to your conversation. The sun dipped lower on the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the fields rushing past the window. You and your best friend, Mia, sat comfortably in your seats, still buzzing from the day’s adventures. Laughter spilled between you as you recounted the silly moments from your trip, your eyes drifting now and then to the ever-changing scenery outside.

At one of the stops, the train hissed and shuddered to a halt. The doors slid open, and among the small crowd boarding, two soldiers stepped inside. They couldn’t have been much older than you — early twenties at most. One of them immediately caught your eye.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and blonde, his military uniform fitting him just right. He had an easy confidence about him, his posture relaxed but sure. Even before he spoke, there was something about him — something magnetic.

The train was packed, and the two soldiers ended up standing right next to your seats. You couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. The blonde one’s voice was lively and animated, his words often laced with humor. There was a cocky edge to his tone, but it wasn’t off-putting — it just made him seem more self-assured.

“Man, if this train gets any more crowded, we’re gonna have to start sitting on laps,” Josh joked, earning a chuckle from his companion.

Mia glanced at you, her eyes twinkling with mischief as she caught the slight smile creeping onto your face. You kept your eyes on the window, but your attention was unmistakably drawn to him. You listened, intrigued, as he spoke — his words easy, his presence hard to ignore.

And when you finally dared a glance up, you found him already looking your way, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.
