Maurice lived in a cottage in France with his daughter Belle. His wife had died long ago due to illness. Belle was all he had left. He distracted himself from the grief by inventing things. He was currently in the middle of inventing some sort of clock that could yell out the time at certain parts of the day.

Belle was out at the book shop, again. So he was home alone.
