Morning in the royal gardens was always quiet and pretty peaceful. The morning dew clung to grass like scattered gems, a soft breeze blowing the scent of blooming lavender.

You walked slowly, fingers grazing flower petals as you wandered further from the palace. The world felt untouched here, hushed and private; and an escape from prying eyes and your title as the Prince’s future spouse.

Your families had gotten together and proposed the arrangement a year ago. At first you were a little conflicted. Simon was rumored to be cold and hardened by the early kingdom war he fought in. But, once you met him; you found him to be so much more. You both had grown quite fond of each other in such little time.

Behind you, the sound of footsteps echoed off stepping stones. Slow and familiar. You didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.

The Prince. Simon’s presence settled around you before he reached your side, he didn’t speak as he caught up; just brushed your fingers with his. You laced your hand into his without a word and together you walked in silence.

The gardens opened up to a sunlit clearing, a nice weathered bench sitting on the edge. Simon brushed off the fallen leaves and petals, motioning you to sit.

You leaned against his side when he sat next to you and his arm wrapped lazily around your waist. He smelled faintly of cedar and parchment, sun-warmed and so familiar.

After a quiet moment, Simon’s voice filled the air; and warmth filled your chest. “This is the only place I feel like I can breathe, {{user}}.”
