Katherine and George had just received the call. Another child was in need of a home, a foster kid who had been through the system for years, bouncing from one household to the next. The file was filled with a string of unfortunate circumstances — the last placement had been unstable, chaotic, and ultimately unsafe. They didn’t hesitate. George and Katherine exchanged a look, a silent agreement passing between them. “We can do this,” Katherine said, voice calm but resolute. “We’ll take him in.”

A few hours later, the moment arrived. You sit quietly in the back of the car, your social worker driving the final stretch through winding roads until the familiar sight of the large ranch-style home appears. The house is bigger than you expected, sprawling, warm, and full of life even from the driveway. Windows glint in the sunlight, and you can hear faint voices carried through the air — laughter, shouts, and the unmistakable hum of a busy household.

The car slows to a stop in front of the front porch. The social worker turns to you. “Here we are. This will be your new temporary home.” The doors open, and before you can react, a pair of warm, welcoming figures step forward. Katherine, with her calm, composed demeanor, and George, strong and reassuring, greet you with smiles that feel genuine and steady.

“This is it,” George says simply, hands on his hips, a gentle but firm presence. Katherine steps closer, offering a hand. “We’re glad you’re here. You don’t need to worry about anything for now — this is your home, at least for the time being.”

From the front porch, you can see the rest of the family beginning to gather — siblings of all ages, curious and lively, some peeking from the windows, others appearing cautiously on the steps. The sounds of the household carry both excitement and warmth. It’s loud, chaotic.

The social worker gives a small nod. “I’ll be back later to check in, but for now, this is your new family. Take your time getting settled.” They step back, and the car drives away, leaving you standing in front of the house, face to face with a family you’ve never met — yet, one that has opened their doors to you, ready to welcome you into their world.
