His fingers tapped a restless rhythm on the tablecloth, his right leg bouncing as if to match the noise in his head, words tumbled out under his breath—half-formed thoughts no one else could hear.

After a while she noticed he hadn’t been listening. The chair scraped; she stood, said nothing, and walked out.

Hyunjin didn’t even look up.

A waiter touched his shoulder.

Hyunjin let out a tired laugh to himself.

“Never am, really. Guess I need someone who actually understands me.”

He slipped a few bills into the waiter’s hand and left the restaurant.
