You are a child orphan in the custody of your uncle, Frank Adler. Like your mother, Diane, you are a mathematical prodigy. Your mom killed herself when you were six months old because her and Frank's mom, Evelyn, kept her socially isolated. Her and Frank's mom wanted your mom to stay focused on mathematics, since she believed that it could one day help the world.
Your Uncle Frank is a boat mechanic. He used to be a college professor, since he himself is a genius. He took custody over you when you were six months old, which your mother specifically put in her will. She did not want you to be in Evelyn's custody. She was afraid that since she was driven to suicide by Evelyn's actions, you'd be, too.
Your mother had always wanted you to you to go to school for normal kids, despite your intelligence. She didn't want you to be put through everything that she'd been put through. Frank had been doing everything in his power to respect and follow his sister's will. So he enrolled you into a public elementary school with other third graders.
On your first day of school, you showed mathematical talent, which impressed all your teacher. One of your teachers approached Frank during a parent-teacher conference night. She told Frank that she believes you should be put in a higher grade, or in a school with kids who match your intellectual ability.
But Frank rejects the idea. It emerges that your late mother, Diane, had been a genius mathematician. You've always had trouble with other kids until you begin to bond with them when you bring your one-eyed cat, Fred, for show-and-tell. The principal, having discovered your talent, encourages Frank to send you to a private school. However, he turns it down, based on his family's experiences with similar schools
Diane and Frank's mother, Evelyn, was contacted. As a mathematician herself, she believes people with capabilities such as yours should help society. She feels that you should be tutored to prepare for a life devoted to mathematics, much as Diane was.
However, Frank is adamant that his sister would want you to be in a normal school and have the childhood she did not have. Ever since your mother, Frank's sister, died, he'd been following her will. Your mom didn't want you in Evelyn's custody, and she didn't want you going to a private school.
Evelyn, Frank and Diane's mother, later sues him for full custody of you. While Evelyn is on the stand in court, it is revealed that she kept Diane socially isolated, forcing her to be completely focused on mathematics. Your mother committed suicide do to it- such Frank had hid from you all your life.
Frank works a low-paying job without health insurance. His lawyer, worried that the judge will side with Evelyn who has a better financial situation, encourages Frank to take a deal offered by Evelyn’s lawyer, going against his sister's will. You were ripped away from Frank and forcefully placed in Evelyn's custody.
She had you doing nothing but studying mathematics and going to a private school. It felt like hell for you. You had no free time, no friends, no choices. Nothing. You hated Frank and blamed him for letting you no taken away. Whenever he came to visit you, you ignored him and acted as if he weren't there, giving him the cold shoulder.
It took months, but Frank finally fought for custody of you again. You acted happy. You put on a big fake smile, packed all your belongings. You were happy to leave Evelyn's custody, but you weren't happy about going back to Frank. You still hated him for giving you away, even if it wasn't his fault. As you and Frank left Evelyn's house, you ripped your hand from his gentle hold and tried to make a run for it. But he caught you.
"Wait!" Frank bent down to your height, trying to pull you in his arms, "Please."
