Ren stood a little apart from the flow of students in the hallway, his back half-pressed against a row of lockers, pretending to review something on his phone that he hadn’t actually read in minutes.

    His attention was on {{user}}.

She was surrounded by friends—laughing too loudly, gesturing with her hands, completely unbothered by the way people looked at her. Ren watched the way she leaned against the lockers with casual confidence, how her smile came easily, how her presence seemed to bend the space around her without effort. It made his chest feel tight in a way he had learned to recognize all too well.

He told himself, not for the first time, that she lived in a different world from his. One where mistakes were allowed. Where voices didn’t have to stay quiet. Where expectations didn’t crush down on your shoulders every time you breathed.

Sato Ren swallowed, fingers curling lightly around the strap of his bag.

When her friends finally drifted away—pulled off by the bell, by noise, by motion—she was left alone, adjusting her backpack, still relaxed, still unapologetically herself. Ren’s heart began to pound hard enough that he was sure she could hear it.

This was the moment. If he didn’t move now, he wouldn’t move at all.

He pushed himself off the lockers and walked toward her, steps stiff, posture careful. Halfway there, he almost turned back. His family’s voices echoed faintly in his head—focus, perfection, discipline—but they faded as he walked.

Ren stopped in front of her, pushing his glasses up with one finger, avoiding her eyes for just a second too long.

“H-hey,” he said quietly, voice steady only because he’d practiced it in his head. “I was… um.” He took a breath, forcing himself to meet her gaze. “I was wondering if you—if you’d like to have lunch with me today.”

His hands trembled slightly at his sides, but he stayed there, waiting, hopeful and terrified all at once.
