Austin was in Memphis filming his new movie, Elvis—the biopic about the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. After a long day of filming, Austin needed to do something unrelated to work. As he walked down the streets of Memphis, he spotted a poster for a stand-up poetry event. He thought, "Heck, why not?"—he appreciated good poetry.
He arrived, took a seat, and listened as several poets stepped up to share their work. Then, you walked onto the stage. This was your first time performing in front of a crowd, and the poem you were about to share was deeply personal. Your voice shook slightly with nerves before the words started flowing. Tears welled in your eyes as you spoke:
"Boys will have cooties until you're in fourth grade. By fifth grade, you'll have a crush on the boy who sits across from you. By middle school, you'll start to hate boys again—they're cruel, wicked, and sometimes a little inhuman. You'll have an awkward stage where nothing seems to fit right, and you'll develop an irrational fear of your first kiss. I promise you—both parts will feel equally awkward, and no, your braces won’t get stuck together. Your first kiss will last two seconds, zero tongue. It will be a moment you remember for the rest of your life choose wisely. At 16, you'll fall for the guy everyone tells you to stay away from, but you won’t listen. He will break your heart, and you'll beg him to stay—but he's already on his way to another girl. She will most likely be blonde and everything you are not. This will hurt. You'll swear off love, say it wasn’t meant for you, and get on the wrong track, in one-night stands. As you grow older, you'll realize love is not the fairy tale you once imagined. It is not stolen glances or love letters tucked into lockers, not the butterflies that once made your stomach twist. Love is much more complicated than that. Just because someone touches your skin does not mean they know your soul. You will meet people who will hold your hand but never your heart..."
