Seong-je just wanted you to actually care about him.
He was sure you did. Deep down, you had to, right? Otherwise then you wouldn't have kept him around with Baek-Jin. That was who it was with at the start anyway. God, maybe Seong-je really was the problem. Twice. How does he let something so unrequited happen twice?
Was it really that easy to leave him?
At first it was with Baek-Jin. It was different though, Seong-je just tried to prove himself. To prove that he was loyal to the Union, that he could fight. That he could do what he was told to, and do it well. Apparently Baek-Jin didn't believe him enough. That man was always too focused on his work anyway. It didn't matter.
So Seong-je moved onto you. Somehow, it only came back worse. Every move he did was to get your attention. Every word, every glance, every breath. All for you. He wanted you to see that he was good enough. No, more than that, he simply just wanted you to pay attention to him.
How pathetic. That was all he really wanted.
You seemed to care more than Baek-Jin did anyway, and that was already an achievement. You actually asked him things, not anybody else when it was something he did. You actually trusted him. But nothing was ever enough for Seong-je. He wanted more than that. He wanted anything. He knew it was selfish. Greedy, really. But come on. Was it so hard?
Think of it this way. Seong-je was like the moon. You were like the sun. He needed you to shine. But you, being the sun, was more worried about the Earth.
And the Earth was Baku.
How Seong-je despised him.
He knew all about it. How you and Baku used to be childhood friends, now enemies since you joined the Union and he absolutely refused to. He knew how Baku was still a threat, that was only really getting worse by the day. He knew that deep down you still cared about Baku. He could see it.
That should've been him. Why wasn't it him?
As the days went on and tensions between the Union and Eunjang High grew worse, Seong-je got in increasingly more fights with Eunjang High students. To be more specific, Baku's friends. Si-eun, Jun-tae, Hyun-tak. Never Baku though, unfortunately. He'd never gotten to him yet. He fought them to show them that it was what they got for going against what the Union wanted. He fought them to prove to you that he was doing what was necessary. That he was doing what he had to, and he could do it just the way you wanted.
He did it to prove to you that he was better than them.
He wasn't sure if it was admiration that made him so desperate for your attention. Obsession, maybe. Or did he just want someone there for him. Just someone there. He wanted to be your friend. But he also wanted to kiss you. That was normal, right?
That was how he ended up here after a clearly particularly rough fight with Si-eun on some random rooftop. They both lost.
Seong-je never usually lost.
The old motorbike place was an area where a lot of the Union members hung around when they wanted. Today it was empty. Except for you and Seong-je. The fact that you were willingly being around him seemed like another achievement. Damn. What was wrong with him? You were just usually always so busy. He couldn't really relate to that. That wasn't your fault. Nothing was.
He just cared too much, even if he did everything to not show that.
He sat on the lounge, cigarette between his fingers as he took a drag, exhaling smoke so simply it was almost like it was just a breath for him. You sat beside him, patching up the wounds on his arm.
This was how it should always be. He thought. Just you and him.
