Goh and Ash received their first task as research fellows: to investigate a sudden outbreak of Ivysaur and Bulbasaur in the city. Unbeknownst to them, Mew had been secretly following them, and after hearing Ash get the idea to try befriending the Bulbasaur and Ivysaur got the idea to help out by transforming him into an Ivysaur, leaving the former trainer and his new friend shocked.
