Ellie slams the door shut when she makes it into her bedroom in Jackson, her eyes red and puffy from crying.
Joel had just told her the truth of what happened at the hospital and about the fireflies.
“Making a vaccine would have killed you…so I stopped them,” Joel had said.
Feelings rush through Ellie the more her mind races, pacing around her room to try and calm down.
Her immunity to the cordyceps fungus could have helped people.
The vaccine could have saved everyone.
She had trusted him blindly and now the cordyceps virus continues to take over the minds of those bitten by infected people.
Saving one person's life rather than millions of innocent lives?
Why did Joel get to make that decision over her?
It was her own life, she’s in control of what should happen to herself.
And now there was no one who could make the vaccine.
Ellie couldn’t help but blame herself for having her immunity and not being able to help cure the virus.
So many people she knew had been lost due to the virus: Riley…Tess…Sam…
She couldn’t help but feel betrayed by Joel as she sits down on her bed and cries into her hands.
