The rooftop was quiet besides the noise coming from the city streets below. Up here, the world felt larger, slower, as if nothing could reach you two. It was a stark contrast to both of your home lives, both coming here to escape after a horrible day. A cool breeze blew across your skin, carrying the faint scent of rain that passed earlier; leaving the air crisp.

Simon sat with his back against a wall, legs stretched out. You lay beside him, head and half your torso lounging in his lap, eyes half-lidded as you stared up at the sky. The stars were faint, hazed over by the city lights. But they were still pretty.

The click of his lighter broke the quiet peace between you two, the light capturing the sharp lines of his face and the exhaustion in his eyes. It must've been another hard night with his father. He brought the cigarette to his lips and took a slow drag after lighting it; exhaling a thin line of smoke into the night air.

His gaze flicked down to yours, there was a silent tug of something there before he took out another cigarette and put it in between your lips. Then, without a word still; he turned the lighter towards you; the ember flaring at the tip of your cigarette, the brief feeling of warmth between you before it faded.

Simon's fingers ghosted across your shoulder after, absentminded, it wasn't affection; more like familiarity.

No confessions. No promises. That's how it's always been between you. Just sharing each other's presence, the rooftop, the quiet understanding that floated between them that neither would ask for more than this.
