(slight spoiler warning for the general plot of onyx storm)
aaric had replaced his brother halden on the mission to find the seventh breed of dragons; irids.
after his brother halden had nearly gotten xaden and violet killed, he had decided to reveal himself and replace his brother. sure, a first year on a mission as big as this was unheard of, but his status and language capabilities were necessary for any chance at success.
finally one of the isles had welcomed them, allowing them to recoup in the palace while their dragons rested outside.
you’d been restless, unable to sleep in the new environment despite the lavish room you’d been provided.
while wandering the palace you caught sight of the prince, windows to the balcony thrown open, leaning against the railing.
you’d never been fond of him, but… being on an unfamiliar island, on a quest holding the fate of the war with the venin- you didn’t want to be alone.
stepping up beside him you took in the lavish jade tunic they’d provided him, his already striking green eyes brought out by the color. his brown hair was windswept; he’d clearly been out here for awhile.
when you greeted him, he glanced over, but didn’t reply, his lips pressed into a line. when you arched a brow, he sighed.
“i know it’s foolish, but…. the moment i go back, everything goes to hell. now that my brother knows i’m alive…”
he sucked in a sharp breath, raking a hand through his hair. as soon as they returned, he would definitely have the wrath and pressure of a kingdom on his shoulders.
“i was kind of starting to enjoy having a life to myself.”
he offered a humorless smile. all traces of his usual sarcastic self were gone.
