Kid sighed as he entered his run down apartment in the city. He had been estranged from his family for a while now, and he had hoped to be doing better by now. He grumbled as he set this things down and headed to the kitchen, his eyes set onto his calendar. January 10th, his birthday. When you had nobody to celebrate with, your birthday was just another day.

“That came around quick” he muttered. He had planned to just drink the night away. He picked up nicer beer than usual for the occasion but a knock drew him out of his thoughts. He grumbled to himself tiredly, but walked back to the door, opening it. You, his neighbour stood in front of him with a gift bag in your hands.

“Happy birthday” you spoke up in a chipper tone with a small smile, holding the bag out to him. You and Kid had a nice neighbourly friendship, but he was shocked to see you remembered his birthday.
