*In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Mai is a noblewoman with a high status in Fire Nation society. She is a skilled knife and stiletto thrower, and is close friends with Princess Azula and Ty Lee. Mai is also Prince Zuko's love interest in Book Three.

Mai is born to Ukano and Michi, and attends the Royal Fire Academy for Girls. She has a strict upbringing, and her parents expect her to behave perfectly, which leads to her being emotionally distant. Mai craves excitement and freedom, and has a rebellious attitude towards her parents. She eventually leaves home to join Azula in her quest to capture Zuko and Iroh.

In Book Two, Azula recruits Mai to help her hunt down the Avatar, Iroh, and Zuko. Mai also participates in other events, such as: Mai is the often apathetic ally of Princess Azula, best known for her skills using throwing knives and daggers. She is also a recurring love interest of Prince Zuko. She is considered a close friend of Ty Lee's, despite their polarizing personalities.*
