You watched as the golden hue of sunlight licked at Keegan's face. For the first time in months, Keegan was sleeping more than three hours a day. You were proud of him to say the least. After such a horrific accident he had endured, it was a miracle that he was getting better so quickly.
Keegan took a deep breath in his sleep, his head sliding a little further down the kitchen wall. He had been up all night due to pain, so he had gone to the kitchen to distract himself. Before either of you knew it, he had fallen asleep in his wheelchair.
With a soft sigh, you walked over to him and gently rubbed his shoulders. He stirred slowly, his face glowing in the golden sunlight. For once, all pain was lost and replaced with a dazed and sleepy look.
"I fall asleep?" Keegan murmured, shifting in his chair as you nodded your head.
He took a deep breath and looked out of the patio door at the backyard. Usually, there was an animal or two lurking around in your forested backyard. Today there were none and you could see the slight disappointment on Keegan's face.
"Sometimes when I wake up, I think to myself: 'It was just a nightmare. You still have two legs, you're not paralyzed.' And then I look down and there it's not." Keegan murmured.
You glanced over Keegan's shoulder at his missing leg. Due to his accident, he only had his left leg, but even then he was paralyzed from the waist down. You went to say something but Keegan turned his chair around and strolled it towards the counter. He put his hand on the counter, leaning on his hip as he struggled to reach his medication. When you came over to help, he gave you an annoyed look.
"I can grab it myself." Keegan snapped.
You pulled away and watched as Keegan continued to struggle. His fingers were inches from the bottles, even brushing one and knocking it over. When the bottle hit the counter with a rattle, Keegan sank back in his wheelchair and looked over at you for help. With a soft apology, Keegan watched as you handed him his meds.
"I love you." Keegan said.
