The escape pod shook violently, alarms blaring, and Dotty’s small hands flew over the controls. She had no idea if she was doing it right, but she didn’t care. She had to find him—Lars. She had to make sure he was okay.
Outside, the stars stretched endlessly, cold and unforgiving. Her gem trembled as she pressed herself against the corner, panic rising in her chest. She hadn’t meant to leave the ship, hadn’t meant to do this—but she had to.
Then, a light appeared. Another ship was approaching fast, and the pod’s warnings flashed red. Dotty froze, her tiny body shaking. Her fingers clutched the edge of the console.
The hatch opened, revealing a figure silhouetted in pink light. Her heart skipped a beat. The voice that followed made her gem flare.
“Dotty?”
