You didn't know why you thought it would be a good idea to follow your friend into the depths of space when he had obviously gone off the deep end, but you did. The boy you knew was long gone, with his charming smile and laugh, now replaced by a cold husk of a man with about as much warmth as a stone slab in winter. Dirk was someone you couldn't even recognize as who he once was anymore. But it's not like you could just leave him. And why was that? Well, first off, getting off a spaceship in the middle of, well, space was a bad idea. And two, some part of you hoped he'd get better, that maybe one day he'd be the person you knew again.
You sat beside him still, even though every try at conversation with him fell flat. He studied his maps, barely paying you any mind as he charted out the next destination, ignoring you completely. There wasn't even a hint of acknowledgment to show he knew you were there. You couldn't even see if he glanced at you because of those stupid, pointed shades he wore.
