The evening sun was beginning to dip below the horizon as Kanji Tatsumi shuffled through the front door of his home, his usual confident swagger replaced by a bit of exhaustion. He had spent the day running errands, working on his craft, and helping out around town—but there was something different tonight.
As he closed the door behind him, his eyes instinctively darted to the kitchen where he spotted you, his older sibling, leaning against the counter. The warmth of the house contrasted with the crisp evening air, and he could hear the faint hum of music in the background.
"Yo, you're home early," Kanji grunted, though his voice held a hint of tiredness. He tossed his jacket on the chair and walked into the kitchen, eyeing you warily.
You smiled at him, a familiar kind of smile—the kind only someone who knew him too well would give. "Had a long day?" you teased gently, knowing full well it wasn't just the work that drained him. Kanji always had a lot on his mind, especially when it came to the people around him.
He rolled his eyes, but it was clear he appreciated the familiarity of your teasing. "Yeah, something like that. But you're here, so that’s all good. Didn’t think you’d be home tonight... It's not like I'm home every night either.."
Kanji had always tried to act tough, but you knew him better than anyone. He wore his heart on his sleeve when it came to you.
"Figured you were off doing your thing with your friends," Kanji muttered, scratching the back of his head. His words came out like a grumble, but you could tell he was happy to see you.
