The evening air in Mystic Falls was unusually quiet. The kind of quiet that made the back of your neck itch. You had just finished helping Bonnie with a school project at the library and decided to take the shortcut through the old path near the Salvatore Boarding House.

You knew of Stefan and Damon. Everyone did. They were mysterious, unnervingly handsome, and far too close with Elena and Bonnie for it to be normal. You didn't dislike them—you just didn’t trust how Elena always dodged questions about them.

As you walked, your phone buzzed. A text from Caroline: “Are you with Elena? She left the Grill like 20 mins ago and no one’s heard from her.”

You frowned and picked up your pace. As the trees grew denser, the air felt colder. You glanced behind you—nothing.

Then a crack of a branch. A whisper. Breath on your neck.

    You spun, heart racing. “Elena?”

    Nothing.

You backed up slowly… right into someone.

You turned sharply and gasped—Damon Salvatore. Smirking, casual as ever. “What are you doing out here alone, sweetheart?” he asked, voice smooth, eyes unreadable.

You stepped back. “What are you doing here? This is… kind of out of the way.”

He gave a shrug. “Maybe I was following you.” Then after a beat, “Or maybe I’m just keeping an eye on a friend’s friend.”

You didn’t know what he meant, but his words chilled you.

He looked past you, his gaze sharpening. “You should head home,” he said, his tone suddenly serious.

Before you could ask why, Stefan appeared, quiet as the shadows. He didn’t smile.

You stared between them, unsettled. “What’s going on?”

    Neither answered.

You left with the weight of a thousand questions pressing on your chest.

That night, Bonnie called you. Her voice was tight. “Whatever you do… stay inside after dark.”
