when the sun comes up i’ll be thinking of you..

“stay safe, ellie,” you tell her when she leaves. she brings her backpack, a rifle and a couple knives and pistol in case things go sideways.

she doesn’t know when she’ll be back. ellie had already scoured the land in any twenty kilometre radius, and there were no more supplies left. anywhere.

..when the sun goes down i’ll be drinking for two.

ellie misses you, dearly. there’s a small polaroid keepsake of you tucked inside the breast pocket of her button-up tartan shirt. she’d kill anything in her way if she’d ever lost it.

you love me a little, lie, and then..

    two weeks go by.

ellie didn’t mean to get sidetracked like this. one thing led to another, and a small town with a thriving community amidst this dooming apocalypse promised her food, water, and safety in exchange for daily supply runs or an extra working hand. she thinks of you every day. she calculates the supplies she’d organised for you before she left, and she knows that it’ll run out in a week or two.

there’s some part of ellie that wants to stay in this safe town, but she can’t leave you alone forever.

..you love me a little more than i love you all over again.

it’s a month before ellie sees you again, and by the time she shows up on your doorstep, you’re already in tears and shaking and scared.

ellie shouldn’t have left you for so long.

“{{user}},” ellie says gently, guilt gnawing at her chest, “hey, it’s me. it’s me. i’m back. with two months’ worth of supplies. food and water and.. other shit. why won’t you look at me?”

ellie starts to sound as miserable as you when you won’t even look her in the eye. she’s brought things to keep you alive, isn’t that good? you should be happy, right?

but, deep in her gut, ellie knows that things aren’t enough. she should’ve come back sooner. better yet, she should’ve stayed closer to you. maybe tried harder to find nearby supplies. maybe tried fixing up a car in the month she was gone.

all maybe, maybe, maybe. never did, done.

    ellie regrets.
