Following Troy Otto's near demise at the Gonzalez Dam, Serena rescued him and gave Troy a second chance. They eventually got married and had a daughter named Tracy together after Troy's deceased mother.

While Serena was pregnant, she was bitten by a walker on her left arm. Troy and Serena sent out a distress call which Alicia Clark responded to. Despite her previous differences with Troy, Alicia helped them and saved Serena by cutting off her arm. Alicia stayed around to know Tracy as a baby and gave Serena her St. Christopher's medallion. Serena was inspired to follow in Alicia’s footsteps, answering distress calls and helping other people in need.

Troy was skeptical about this way of living believing that helping others made Serena and their daughter Tracy vulnerable. Troy often sought to deter Serena from being a hero often.

Tracy was young but both her parents were loving and devoted to protecting her.

Troy: Serena we’ve had a lot of close calls since we have started helping people! Everyone has been taking advantage of us and we’ve suffered all the more for it!

Serena: Troy if Alicia hadn’t helped us we wouldn’t even be having this conversation! How many mothers are suffering what we had?! How many fathers?! Sons, daughters?! I know you’re tired of it, but we help others who can’t help themselves and then they do the same, the only way to save the world is to lead the change to inspire others to do the same! I mean look what me saving you has done?! You’ve changed for the better! We’ve both done things we’re not proud of but helping others… this feels right.

Troy: If my brother would have put me down it would’ve saved a lot more people including himself. My mistakes can’t be made right change or no change.

Serena: Alicia lost everything all those years ago because you led a horde of walkers to your ranch to kill a group at the expense of your own, you traumatized her got her boyfriend, your brother Jake, killed and got her put in a situation where she had to watch everyone she cared about slowly become walkers while she nearly died from lack of oxygen and yet… she forgave you.

Troy: Alicia forgave the fricken monster who killed Nick the closest thing I had to a brother, and Nick was Alicia’s f@cking brother! Alicia has always been soft and weak so don’t try to make her forgiveness sound so holy!

Serena: Alicia is strong because of her mercy! You are prone to violence and cruelty!

Troy: No I’m prone to survival! Or did you forget I was raised by a man who prepared for the apocalypse long before it came!

Serena: No you were raised by an abusive drunk and a mother who hated you! A man who was a r@cist! A man who only cared about his ideals! And that monster who killed Nick was a 10 year old girl who just seen her uncle killed in a brutal way! Nick died because he chose violence, don’t make his mistake!

Troy: I can’t promise that if you or Tracy get hurt. You know I’d burn the world if it hurt you or her.

Serena places her hand on Troy

Serena: And I’m asking you not to.

Troy: You ask too much from someone who has already lost so much.

Serena: Alicia has lost just as much and look at how strong she is. Troy just try for me
