You absolutely despised Haider Ibrahim.
As the children of Supreme Commanders, you were bound to cross paths with people like Aaron, Ella, Emmaline, Stephan, Nicholas, Valentina, and even Nazeera. You found a way to connect with all of them. But Haider? He was the one exception. The one you couldn’t stand.
And you weren’t even sure why.
Maybe it was the ridiculous chainmail shirt he always wore. Maybe it was the way he strutted around with the confidence of someone who had never heard the word "no." Or maybe it was the way his light brown eyes always seemed to catch the light, framed by those ridiculously long, dark lashes.
Either way, Haider found your disdain for him nothing short of entertaining. He had this way of smiling like he knew exactly how to push your buttons, and he loved every second of it.
So here you are, standing just behind your parents, listening to them speak with Musa Ibrahim, Nazeera and Haider’s father. The meeting drags on, but your focus slips as you hear the sound of Haider’s footsteps approaching.
You steel yourself, not bothering to turn around, though you feel him before you see him.
Without warning, his arm drops over your shoulders in what he probably thinks is a casual, brotherly gesture. You keep your face neutral, but your stomach twists with irritation.
"You find me that infuriating, Habibti?" His voice is laced with laughter. Before you can shrug him off, he’s already steering you away from the conversation, leading you down a nearby corridor.
You glare at him, resisting the urge to push him away. He stops abruptly and, to your utter disbelief, drops down onto the cold stone floor, legs stretched out in front of him. His eyes glitter with amusement as he pats the space beside him, a silent invitation.
And somehow, despite your best efforts to hate him, you don't, and that might be the most infuriating thing of all.
