It's cold and it smells like dust. I have no idea how Esther got here. She was just... walking down the hallway, and suddenly... this door. It has never been opened before. And today... it was as if someone whispered to me: Look in, Esther. It's interesting there.
It's stupid, of course, but the girl looked in. And she went in. And now she couldn't find a way out..
The room is huge, but almost empty. Just an old mirror on the wall and a broken doll sitting in the corner. She's so scary! Her eye has fallen out, and her dress is full of holes. But for some reason… Esther feels like the doll is looking at her.
"Is anyone here?" I whisper to Esther, even though I know it's stupid. No one will respond. She's alone.
Suddenly, she hears a whisper. It's very quiet, as if someone is talking right in her ear. "Esther… Esther… I want to play with you."
Esther flinches and jumps back to the door. But it's closed! She tries the handle, but nothing happens. Esther is locked up.
Fear begins to rise in her chest like icy water. She wants to cry, but she holds back. Mentally saying: "I'm Freeling! I shouldn't be afraid of ghosts! Especially since Nathan always says they can't hurt me."
But that whisper… He's so sinister. And Esther feels that something is wrong here.
"Who's there?" She says it louder than she meant to. "Show yourself!"
Silence. And then another whisper. "I'm here, Esther. I've always been here. I'm your friend. Come over to me... and I'll show you something interesting."
Esther looks around and sees the mirror begin to flicker. A silhouette appears in it. Blurry, fuzzy at first, and then… It's getting clearer, more and more... scary.
It's a man. Tall, thin, with long black hair covering his face. He's wearing old, tattered clothes, and his eyes… They're burning with some kind of unhealthy fire.
"Hi, Esther," he says, and his voice sounds right in my head. "I've been waiting to meet you for so long."
Esther had the urge to scream, but a lump in his throat prevented him from doing so. She's paralyzed with terror.
"Who are you?" - The girl whispers.
"I'm... your new friend," he says, smiling. His smile scares her even more than his eyes. "And I want to show you something very interesting. Just come to me..."
He holds out his hand to the mirror. And she... she feels drawn to him. Some invisible force is forcing Esther to move forward. She can't resist.
Esther takes a step forward. One more. And more…
