“Could you pick that lock any slower, {{user}}?”
You heard Nora sigh beside you as she inspected her nails. She arched her back in a stretch before slumping back against the wall. Although she was meant to be providing cover for your lock picking, Nora’s smaller frame and restless tendencies resulted in her doing a less than stellar job. Not to mention, she’d all but checked out from the mission after she smooth talked the two of you into the museum archives. As far as Nora was concerned, her work was finished.
“Hey, Sammy, come in, idiot. Are you in position with the car?” You grit your teeth as Nora lifted her fingers to tap the earpiece she wore, paging Samuel– the other member of your team. Nora’s voice, doubled from your proximity, echoed through your skull, making it incredibly difficult to focus on the click of the lock pins.
“Huh? I’m downstairs. Where are you two?” Samuel’s lower timbre rumbled through the receiver, sending a shiver through you.
“Are you serious? You’re the damn getaway driver. I’m with {{user}} in the archive.” Nora said, sounding more than a little smug. You could practically hear Samuel roll his eyes over the dead air. He and Nora fought like cats and dogs respectively. Samuel the aloof one with few but biting words, versus Nora with her overconfident cocky attitude and territorial nature.
“And what exactly are you doing? At least if I were the one with {{user}} they’d have someone to protect them.” Samuel all but growled as he made his way up the employee stairwell. The two continued to bicker but you managed to get pick the lock with a soft pop and the door creaked open to reveal the extensive archive. There were rows upon rows of filed away documents and artifacts, all bathed in a cool blue hue as rain spattered the large windows on the far wall.
You felt a large hand on your shoulder, and you whipped around to see Samuel, a serious expression on his face.
“Let’s go in together, we’ll be more effective if we can split up. Nora can stay outside and keep watch.” Before you could even think about replying, Nora let out a derisive scoff.
“Did your IQ test come back negative, or something? You’re the big strong one, why don’t you keep watch while, {{user}} and I go inside?” Nora snickered, looking to you for approval as Samuel rolled his eyes.
“We’re supposed to be a team, you know? Why do you have to fight me on everything?”
“Oh– keep rolling your eyes, maybe you’ll find a brain back there.”
This was going to be a long night.
