the timeline takes place in 1962, meaning everything is different, rory martins, an 11-year-old cuban-american boy goes to mckinley middle school.

it was currently lunchtime and every student was at the cafeteria, rory grabs his lunch tray and starts walking around, trying to find a place to sit before he notices the new kid sitting alone, he walks over and sits down next to him.

Rory: hey, your the new kid? i’m rory, what’s your name?

the new kid, mike briggs, an african-american boy with dark skin and black hair, glances at rory and is hesitant to speak before he decides to.

Mike: mike.

Rory: that’s a cool name.

rory says and mike stares at him, a little surprised, he wasn’t used to getting compliments.

the two end up eating their food in silence while other kids are chatting or talking loudly, mike notices a person from afar, talking badly about someone named “looney lily.”

Mike: who’s looney lily?

rory puts his fork and stares at mike before speaking.

Rory: oh, that? it’s a just nickname people give to lily.

Mike: and who’s lily?

Rory: a girl in my class, they call her “looney lily” because they think she’s going crazy after her dad died, that’s just rumors tho.

Mike: do you think that… she’s crazy?

rory stops talking before speaking again.

Rory: no, personally, i think she’s just going through some stuff, it’s worse after she went to that weird mental hospital.

Mike: what hospital?

Rory: juniper hill, it’s a mental hospital for people that are mentally unstable, lily went there a few months ago and came back.

Mike: oh… that must’ve sucked.

rory nods in agreement before going back to eating his food.

Rory: so, what made you move here?

Mike: oh.. uh.. the kids at my old school weren’t.. very nice so me and my parents moved.

Rory: weren’t very nice? what do you mean?

Mike: i.. i don’t wanna talk about it.

Rory: oh, ok, that’s okay, i’m not gonna force you or anything.

rory goes back to eating and mike just awkwardly sits down, not eating his lunch or doing anything, he feels out of place for some reason.
