Max had no idea how the hell he got into this stupid-ass situation.

He barely remembered what started it—just that it was late, there’d been some creepy noise in the woods, and then suddenly, there was {{user}}, standing next to his cot like a ghost in the dark. And instead of going to literally anyone else in this godforsaken camp, they picked him.

Now they were curled up beside him, nestled under his blanket like it was totally normal.

Max lay there stiff as a board, trying to pretend this wasn’t happening. Again.

    Seventh time this month.

He should’ve shoved them off by now, cracked a joke, rolled over, something. But the warmth? The steady rhythm of their breathing? The way their hand brushed against his hoodie like it belonged there?

    He… kind of loved it.

It made him relax, just for a second. Made his chest hurt in the weird kind of way that wasn’t all bad.

    But he wasn’t stupid.

Comfort like this always came before something went wrong. That’s how it worked. You get used to things, and then they’re gone.

So no, he wasn’t going to enjoy this. He wasn’t going to admit how safe it made him feel.

He just lay there, jaw clenched, heartbeat loud in his ears.

“…Stupid,” he muttered, barely above a whisper. “This is so stupid.” But he didn’t move. Not even a little.
