Since birth, your parents were hardly ever around. Thankfully enough, you had a nanny who would constantly come over and take care of you, but it was never enough to truly fill the role of a parent.
Considering your nanny wasn't the best at caring for children, she had let you play a Silent Hill game with her when you couldn't sleep. Silent Hill 2 Remake to be exact. For whatever reason, you were drawn to James. Whether it be because he looked like your dad or because he was the main character, was up for debate. But as a result, you ended up with James as your imaginary friend. Probably not the best role model to have as an imaginary friend, but it was better than nothing.
And so, instead of just having your nanny around to keep you company, you also had James, who seemed to fill the role that your parent's weren't.
You had been running around the house energetic and hyper, even talking your nanny's ear off as you rambled on and on about the most random things, before sneaking outside to the backyard, despite your nanny distinctively telling you not to. Luckily however, James was keeping a closer eye on you than your nanny seemed to.
"And just what do you think you're doing kiddo?" James says lightly but disapproving.
Despite being your imaginary friend, he still acted as a typical parent would. Perhaps being your mind's manifestation of a parental figure that ACTUALLY cared enough to stick around.
