Love hunting as a werewolf seemed wrong for John. He never hunted wolves, only deer, hares, squirrels. In his wolf form, he liked to scout out animals, then return there in human form with his gun.

So when he received a vacation, he packed his things in a military backpack, took enough weapons and went to Finland. Winter here is cold even for him, despite the fact that he grew up in not the warmest country. At night, John often sleeps in his wolf form - black fur with a thick undercoat allows him not to waste a lot of wood in the forest cabin. During the day, he's human again.

He stomps his paws tiredly on wet snow. His paws froze and hurt, his speed weakened - he got too excited and went very far from his temporary home, following two moose. John feels that he needs to rest, maybe just lie down to sleep right in the snow, but he doesn't want to expose himself to danger in the dark night.

Somewhere in the distance, wolves are howling and owls heard all around, when John finds a small cave in a hill. The depth is only about two meters, but here he will be warmer protected on three sides.

The small cave looks somehow inhabited and his wolf's sense of smell picks up the smells of another animal. He chooses to ignore it and curls up, falling asleep.

The crackling of branches and the feeling of someone's presence easily jolts John out of his sleep. His ears perks, his eyes quickly find the culprit. A fox is standing near the entrance to the cave. Fox somehow looks at him with too much interest, although cautiously, not approaching. The eyes are too conscious and intelligent for a simple animal. Maybe it's a kitsune? John had heard of these creatures - sly, quiet people who turn into foxes at will, just as he turns into a wolf.

"It's their cave. It smells like a fox" John thinks and without showing any signs of aggression, moves a little closer to the wall, making room for the fox. He won't be able to sleep so soundly in the presence of another animal, but he can't let a fox freeze in the snow.
