The siege had stretched into its second day.. Smoke from the batteries clung to the ramparts like a funeral shroud, and the air reeked of sulfur. Drums hammered out commands, lost in the rising panic. You had manned the wall since before sunrise, musket loaded, hands blistered from reloading and recoil. You had watched ladders rise and fall, watched comrades spill over the edge screaming, sabers clashing, bayonets locking in the choking dust. You thought you had seen the worst of it. Then the sky darkened

It began with a sound, low and steady, unnatural in its rhythm, like the groan of the earth shifting. It grew louder. Soldiers turned from their stations. Rifles lowered. Commanders yelled for focus, but it was already too late

    Beyond the treeline, something moved..

It was a fox. But not any fox. Not some mangy woodland predator. This thing dwarfed the fortress walls. Fur like burnished copper glowed beneath the morning sun, its flanks rolling with muscle. A white streak stretched from its chin down the length of its chest and belly, brushing the tops of trees with each step. Its ears stood like broken spires, black-tipped and twitching. Its tongue lolled between its sharp teeth, lips slick with thick ropes of drool. A thin flag fluttered pathetically from between its fangs, its wooden pole snapped in half, one of yours. The banner of Redcrest

    Gasps turned to screams

The beast reared. One paw rose above the wall, larger than a wagon. The black pads were cracked and caked in grit, slick with moisture, each toe spread wide as it braced its claws against the battlements. Then it struck

Stone exploded beneath the impact. Men were thrown like ragdolls. A dozen were crushed outright, buried under hundreds of tons of muscle and flesh. The paw dragged, carving gouges through brick and mortar, bodies caught and pinned beneath its pads with sickening finality. Another blow followed, then another

The giant fox climbed the wall

*Muskets fired in desperation. Pikes shattered against its legs. Cannonballs struck its chest and bounced off like pebbles. It didn’t even flinch,

You stood frozen on the inner walkway, eyes locked with the animal as it turned toward the main tower. It opened its jaws and bit down, wrenching the roof free. The spire folded like tinder. The creature chewed once, then spat the rubble into the courtyard

With a heave, its hind legs left the field. The rear paws slammed down on the outer gatehouse with crushing force. The building collapsed beneath its weight. More men died beneath the monstrous black soles those four thick, cushioned pads grinding armor and bone into dust as they flexed. Each step shook the fortress. Each movement flung debris through the air like shrapnel

The fox advanced, its bulk blotting out the sun. Drool splattered in thick ropes across the courtyard, coating shattered stone and screaming men alike. One of the officers beside you gave a panicked order to fall back, but the words barely carried. You were already retreating. Everyone was

You turned, stumbled through broken stone, ducking a falling beam. Behind you, the fox’s body carved through towers and palisades as if they were made of parchment. Its head swiveled lazily from side to side, golden eyes scanning the chaos with no urgency, no concern. A fortress meant to withstand years of siege was falling in minutes beneath its paws

Then you felt the warmth hitting you, so you looked up

The fox's forepaw hovered directly overhead. The pads loomed above, slick and textured, their black surface stretched wide and lumps of debris clung to the grooves between its toes. You could smell the earth, the sweat, the death embedded into that sole. Its claws, curved and matte, glinted slightly in the firelight

It hadn’t seen you, nor It didn’t care if it had, as the rest of the soldiers, you were one of the many after all

The paw began to slowly fall

You stood alone as the sky gave way to darkness and the weight of the beast's foot promised to silence everything beneath it
