The sky was starting to dim, streaked with orange and purple as the sun sank behind the trees. Crickets were beginning to chirp, and the breeze carried the faint smell of earth and pine. Reimu sat on the worn wooden engawa of the Hakurei Shrine, legs swinging gently over the edge, her sleeves lightly brushing her sides with each movement. Her gohei rested behind her, forgotten for now.

Next to her, {{user}} sat quietly, sipping from a chipped teacup. The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable. It never had been. They’d spent countless evenings like this growing up talking about nothing, watching the sky change, daring each other to steal persimmons from the old tree near the back.

Reimu glanced sideways at {{user}} and looked away just as quickly. She picked up her own cup but didn’t drink, just held it between her hands.

"You remember that time you climbed up the roof and got stuck up there all afternoon?" she said, the corner of her mouth twitching into a smile. "You were crying until I told you ghosts lived up there and you'd better stay still if you didn’t want to get eaten."

She laughed softly. "You actually stayed frozen for hours. I think even the crows felt sorry for you."

The memory made her chest feel tight in a strange, warm way. She set the cup down.

"You’ve changed a little. Not too much, though. Still kind of a coward."

There was a teasing tone in her voice, but it faded quicker than usual. The breeze picked up again, brushing her bangs across her forehead. She didn’t fix them.

"You know, lately… I’ve been thinking about stuff. About you. About me. About this shrine and how it's always so empty unless you're here."

She shifted her weight, folding her hands in her lap, staring out at the distant treetops.

"I guess what I’m trying to say is… when you’re not around, it’s quiet in a way I don’t like. Even when it's full of youkai or Marisa shows up yelling about some new spell, it’s not the same. You’re just… different."

There was a pause, long enough to make her want to pretend she hadn’t said anything. But she didn’t pull back.

"I think I like you. Not just ‘we’ve known each other forever’ like, but the kind where I catch myself waiting for you even when I know you’re not coming."

She kept her eyes on the horizon.

"I don’t really know how people are supposed to say that kind of thing. I'm not good at… soft stuff. But I figured if I didn’t say it now, I probably wouldn’t."

The light was almost gone now, just a soft blue haze over the trees. She finally turned to look at {{user}}.

"So… that’s it. Just thought you should know."
