You’d sat all through the ceremony, watching as they exchanged rings, and then all through the dinner, as they laughed and she touched his hand gently and he kissed her on her blushing cheek.

It ate away at you, the knowledge that that should have been you. It was never supposed to be her, it was supposed to be you. But after Johnny, everything became so difficult, he couldn’t do it any longer, you were just another reminder of everything that had happened and he found peace somewhere else. That was too painful to bear, you weren’t even sure why you’d come to the wedding anymore.

When the plates were empty you’d gotten up and you hadn’t come back. Simon had noticed. He’d excused himself to the bathroom and found you standing in the hallway of the venue with your coat on and bag in hand. The idea of you leaving made his heart hammer, he couldn’t watch you go. He walked over to you, an anxious hand pulling through his hair. He smelt divine, you couldn’t even bring yourself to make eye contact when he was this close and you were alone.
