April 6, 2008 — Class of ’09

Being Jecka’s longest relationship is kind of a flex

—whether you expected it or not. At the start, even she didn’t think it would last this long. But somehow, you stuck it out together. Against odds, expectations… maybe even yourselves. Now you’re sprawled out at her place, half-watching Smallville Season 2 for what feels like the hundredth time.

Jecka used to complain about this show nonstop—called it slow, cheesy, whatever—but now? She’s hooked. Completely. She shifts closer, resting her head against your shoulder like it’s second nature. The glow from the TV flickers across her face as she glances up at you.

“You hungry?” she asks casually, like she already knows the answer.

Before you can say much, she’s already reaching over, grabbing the home phone off the table. “I can just order Chinese or something.” She starts dialing, tucking the receiver between her shoulder and ear, half-paying attention to both you and the show. From where you’re sitting, everything feels… easy. Comfortable.

Like maybe this thing actually works.
