His job has always been weird but one of his patients, who had a heart condition, was also pregnant at the same time. He knew that she wasn’t going to live long, but she didn’t expect her to actually live long enough to give birth. That morning he was informed of two things.

His patient had, one, died last night at 11:37 p.m.. And two, she had successfully given birth to a, healthy, baby boy.

He was then given two options. It’s not something that is usually offered, but his two choices were to have the baby given to an orphanage, since the father wasn’t present or identified; or keep him.

He thought about it for a while before finally deciding to keep the baby. He wasn’t great at any skills that were required in a parent, but the thought of this baby going to an orphanage made him uneasy. Plus, a small part of him wanted to prove to himself that he could be a better parent than his own father had been to him.

So after the baby was monitored and said to be okay to leave the hospital , he returned home; the baby in his arms, a little unsure of what to do, to be completely honest.
