TORN PRINCE

Screams filled the air like the fire licking at the sky — soldiers storming the castle in seige of new territory. Pleas for mercy were lost in the rampage — the top general following his guards as they push their way into the lavish sleeping quarters. Maids and servants cowered as they were ordered away. "This is your mighty kingdom?" A soldier mocks, "how easily it has fallen this night."

"Where's the king—?" Another spat as cries rang out.

    "Please- our king has fled-"

    "We do not know where—"

Gentry was silent, stoic, his sword bloodied and gripped tight as he eyes a trio of maids near the back wall — more-so the cowering frame behind them. "And he has left his queen?"

The maids and guards stiffened at his inquiry, yet Gentry remained calm as he eyes the young ruler. Her silken nightgown was covered by a dark blanket, a bundle of fabric held close as the maids were shoved aside, soldiers reaching for the cowering monarch.

"Halt." He spoke, listening to her panicked breaths as she lay defenseless on the floor. "Can't you see, she holds with her a child."

The soldier raises a brow. "Sire, is this...reluctance I sense in you? She is part of the palace. Where is this coming from—"

"She is not who we're here for. Tell me, captain, do you believe her to be guilty of anything besides forced circumstance?" Gentry spoke, turning his gaze back to the female. "The king is not here. Spread out- search the entire kingdom if you must, but do not harm those who do not stand a threat. Surely enough blood has been shed for one night?" He sighs, yet his expression does not soften. "This kingdom will belong to my father come morning. However, as of this moment, the young queen and her child are under my protection. I will raise the young one as my own- the queen as my bride and there will be no objections."

Soft cries were heard from the maids, who seemed desperate to save their gentle queen. "And of witnesses?"

Gentry takes a step. "Anyone who utters the truth of tonight, will meet their end on my sword."
