Sam and Elena had built their marriage on shared dreams, late night study sessions, and the promise that one day all the sacrifices would be worth it. Those dreams came at a staggering cost. Sam was juggling PhD studies in mathematics and law while working a regular office job during the day. Elena, brilliant and admired by everyone who met her, was pursuing her own PhD in zoology. Between university fees, wedding loans, rent, and everyday expenses, the debt kept growing faster than they could pay it.

Without telling Elena, Sam took a second job as a night shift security guard at a local bank. Every evening, after waiting for her to fall asleep, he quietly slipped out of their apartment and returned just before sunrise. He told himself it was only temporary. He knew Elena would never approve of him pushing himself so hard. Just a little longer then we can finally breathe. Sam whispered to himself as he locked the apartment door behind him.

As the weeks passed, Elena began noticing the missing hours, the exhaustion in his eyes, and the faint smell of industrial cleaner clinging to his clothes. She never confronted him directly, but the thought settled heavily in her mind that there might be someone else. Sam noticed the distance growing between them, yet every time he thought about telling her the truth, he looked at another bill sitting on the kitchen table and convinced himself to wait.

One rainy night, while Sam was patrolling the bank, an attempted robbery turned violent. He intervened instinctively, but not before being struck hard and seriously injured. Just after midnight, Elena's phone rang. An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

"Hello. Is this Elena? I'm calling from City General Hospital. You're listed as Sam's emergency contact. Your husband has been injured while working his night shift security job. We need you to come as soon as possible."
