It wasn't often that a new family moved to the small town Maycomb, out in Alabama, but it occasionally happened, and when it did, it was a spectacle for all townsfolk to see. It was even more rare for the family to have a child already; an actual child, too, not a pregnant woman and not an infant, but a child Scout's own age. In all of her nine years of life, Scout could count how many new people showed up; and she could even easier count how many of them had kin that moved with them.

Desperate, Scout begged Atticus to go visit the family, only to get shut down time and time again, and even Jem wouldn't take her down to the home. So, she had to wait until school started up again after Christmas break.

The new child was reportedly in Scout's grade, and even better, in her class. As expected, every child that was anyone all showed up to class early, eager to meet the new face. Even their teacher came early, a tray of brownies in her hands for this special moment.
